From Rome to Tivoli, the train is one of the best ways to travel. Once you reach the Tivoli station, we recommend that you head straight to the heart of the city. Here you can visit the wonderful Villa d'Este Gardens, precisely located in the western part of the city center, near the Cathedral. Inside the gardens you can find several beautiful fountains including the monumental Neptune Fountain and the Tivoli Fountain. Then do not forget a visit to the Villa d'Este, which was built in the 16th century on the instructions of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este. Thanks to its location, the villa offers sublime views of the surrounding landscape and the beautiful gardens described above. Inside the villa itself one can find several rooms that have been restored and maintained in their original condition. The details and decorations found within these rooms are spectacular. Notable rooms include the Hall of the Hunt, the Hall of Glory, the Hall of Noah, and the Hall of the First Tribune. Another attraction that makes Tivoli a unique place is the Rocca Pia, an ancient medieval fortress built in the 15th century. This beautiful structure was built during the conflicts between the Guelphs and Ghibellines to strengthen the defense of Tivoli. It is still in excellent condition despite being more than 500 years old. Four crenellated watchtowers surround the keep, and the towers and ramparts both feature an arched lower design. Although entry is not allowed inside the Rocca Pia, it is still an important building in the heart of Tivoli. Also visit the Cathedral of Tivoli, which is the city's main religious building, also known as the Cathedral of San Lorenzo Martire. The structure was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. Inside the cathedral, you can admire the main nave, with absolutely stunning decorations on the ceilings, arches and high altar. Throughout the interior you can see a myriad of different paintings and frescoes, and practically every part of the building contains some ornate decorations. To top it off, we also recommend you visit Villa Gregoriana, the Temple of Vesta, and the Roman Amphitheater.
